Sharing and Collaboration

Larger organisations or associations may have a distributed membership, be it regional offices or simply members that are located over a wide geographical area.

An extranet provides authenticated users with access to resources appropriate to their security credentials but does not necessarily facilitate public access. This type of site is generally servicing a captive audience and requires far more planning in terms of the resources and services that will be facilitated.

Security implications are also significant, particularly where users are being given access to sensitive resources that would normally be restricted to their local network. The services and features that would be provided via an Extranet are almost unlimited and must be planned on a case by case basis.
